The holidays are a great time to gift friends,
family or yourself with books to read. With
people going on vacation, many individuals enjoy relaxing with a good book. And
there certainly are a lot of them being published! You can find books to suit
every age and taste whether fiction or nonfiction. Let’s share recommendations,
whether it be your own work or that of others.
I recently read John Grisham’s CAMINO ISLAND . I
held off on reading it for a while because a friend who I consider an
intelligent fellow reader disliked the book although she is also a fan of
Grisham. I have to say I really enjoyed the novel and my opinion differed
strongly from hers.
I believe I particularly enjoyed the novel because
of the information about the world of bookselling and writing. There was a lot
of insider info of interest to a writer like myself.
The novel begins like a caper story which I
generally don’t find of great interest. However, the theft is at Princeton University ’s
Firestone Library where five original F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts are
stolen. These manuscripts eventually make their way to Bruce Cable, a bookstore
owner in the resort town of Camino Island , Florida . Bruce
loves collecting rare books. He is an interesting, somewhat eccentric character
that Grisham develops thoroughly. Enter Mercer Mann, an attractive young
novelist down on her luck who is enlisted to infiltrate Cable’s literary circle
and help locate the priceless manuscripts. Grisham provides some clever plot
twists. If you haven’t already read the novel, I recommend it.
I also recommend my latest work THE BURNING. The
novella is about a family surviving an environmental disaster. It’s good
reading choice for the holidays appropriate for men and women of all ages and
available in all digital formats as well as print.

books and publications you think will make for good holiday reading. Feel free
to mention work you’ve recently had published if you’re an author. Readers,

enjoyed.

What a great lead-in to my declaration: the best book for mystery fans this season is our book The Clown Forest Murders, just released by Black Opal Books. The lead-in is great because, while our book is a small-town mystery set in upstate New York, all the resolution of the serial murders is done at Princeton. More at Lake Carnegie than at Firestone. The book is dedicated to Princeton's Class of 1966 and Class of 1997 and to those with mental health issues. It's a mystery told from a surviving brother's point of view, and one you won't solve until we tell you the answer.

Bob,
Thanks for sharing info about your new mystery novel.
I don't normally read Grisham, but I love the idea of tracking down a missing Fitzgerald ms. I've put it on my list. I love stories about publishing and writing told from the inside.
Hi Susan,
Yes, I think this is one of Grisham's best.
I've heard SO much about Camino Island....might have to check it out.
Great list of reads, thanks for sharing
Good luck and God's blessings

Hi Pam,
Thanks for commenting.
Great post, Jacquie!
I love a mystery and I also love the books by Fitzgerald. So I'm definitely going to have to check out Camino Island.
Off the top of my head, two books I'd like to recommend are:
"Something So Divine" by J.R. Lindermuth and "Death Overdue" by Allison Brook. There are so many others I've enjoyed reading this year but my mind seems to be a blank.
I do want to mention that I really enjoyed reading "The Burning."
Hi Patricia,
The books you're recommending sound like excellent choices for holiday reading. I appreciate your comments and am glad you enjoyed reading THE BURNING.
Thank you, Jacqueline. MEMORY is a romantic suspense published In March. It is a little steamy. JACK SPRAT COULD is a quirky, NOT steamy murder mystery released in August. I wrote both and both came from The Wild Rose Press and are available.
Meanwhile, a surprise occurred in May when Simon & Schuster purchased Adams Media, a buyout that included my only historical romance, NIGHTINGALE. G-rated, this one has been recommended for teens.
All of these are available, along with the other eleven novels I've written, in print or electronic formats and are good for curling up in the wintery months ahead, something cozy to read after the hectic holidays are over. I'd love to hear comments on any of my books, pro or con. Merry Christmas!
Sharon,
Congrats on all of these wonderful publishing credits! Thanks for letting other readers and writers know about them.
Great post! With all the crazy weather we are having, I'll have to check out your story! I am guessing by the title and your description of environmental disaster, that it's a forest fire? We just survived a hurricane/ flood here in Houston. I felt like I was in a disaster story, leaving my home in a stranger's boat with 6 dogs and my family. I'll put you on my reading list!
Other great series to check out over the holidays is Nicki Alexander series, starting with Less Dead by Laura Elvebak. Her gritty urban mystery is wonderful. Tonya Royston has a wonderful YA series called the Sunset Trilogies that I loved. When I really want to laugh, I read Jana Deleon. Her Miss Fortune series is hilarious, and last but not least, we wrote a West Texas, humorous Romance, Daisy Dukes 'n Cowboy boots. Our newest release is a zany urban fantasy, Blinked. Both perfect for escaping the real world.
I found THE BURNING to be fascinating and compelling, especially since it is based on a true burning town. I am also highly concerned about the environment and that is certainly involved in the novella. I would recommend my own Overhome Trilogy, a cozy mystery/Southern Gothic series to warm up Christmas stockings. A RED, RED ROSE, BENEATH THE STONES, and NOBODY KNOWS. All available at Amazon in e-book and print. Thanks for the opportunity to share.
Zara,
Lots of talented authors like yourself writing in Texas. Congrats on your current work and thanks for commenting.
Susan,
Thank you for reading and recommending The Burning. I've read your trilogy and recommend it to other readers. I love Southern Gothic. My own effort in the genre is DARK MOON RISING.
