Putting Product in the Pipeline by Jacqueline Seewald

Big Pharma is concerned with developing new drugs. They do lots of research and testing in an effort to “put product into the pipeline”. We writers in our humble way are also attempting to place our work out there for consumers.

We worry if there is too little product in the pipeline, if publishers are not buying our new work. However, it can also be a problem if too much product appears all at once because then there appears to be a glut of our work in the pipeline. It seems to cheapen our efforts. For instance, in April, three of my books were published by three different publishers: THE BAD WIFE (4th Kim Reynolds mystery novel) in both print and e-book, THE DEVIL AND DANNA WEBSTER (a clean read YA novel) as an e-book, and TEA LEAVES AND TAROT CARDS (a Regency romance) which was previously published in hardcover, large print and now as an e-book. Needless to say, each book deserved my top promotion efforts. However, that can prove exhausting.

One good way to make our past print work available is to sell e-book publishers our backlist titles when possible. There are many readers who have not had the opportunity to read our prior work. Right now I am very happy to announce that my romantic suspense mystery thriller DEATH LEGACY will be returning next month in a brand new digital edition.

This spy thriller was originally published by Five Star/Gale/Cengage in hardcover March 2012, followed by a hardcover large print Thorndike Press edition.  The novel received excellent reviews from PUBLISHERS WEEKLY and BOOKLIST among others.  In September 2013, Harlequin Worldwide Mystery published a paperback edition which sold out in just a few months. This book has never before been available as an e-book.

The Novel Fox will publish the new digital edition. You can read all about it here:

More about this novel when the new edition is published next month! I’ll post on my personal blog:  http://jacquelineseewald.blogspot.com

As to new work, I recently signed with Five Star/Gale/Cengage for another hardcover print novel, but the publication date is February 2016. And so my efforts continue to place more product in the pipeline. To my fellow authors, I recommend diversification—write in a variety of genres. I believe it’s the best road to continued publication and increased readership.

Your thoughts and comments are most welcome!

I can't wait until I get a big back list. Your advice makes sense. Thanks.

Congrats on the good news! It's great to keep new things coming as well as repackaging the old ones for new channels.

Hi, Ashley,

Yes, never forget about the back list! As the old saying goes: everything old is new again.

That's a very useful tip. You're welcome to stop by the Exquisite Quills blog for our mixed genre day today. It's a chance to promote your other works. :)

Congratulations too!

Hi, Karen,

I'm with you there! We always want to create and sell new writing, but we should never ignore or forget about our previous work.

Maddy said...

Indeed. I'm most impressed with your productivity too.

Jacqueline, what you say makes a lot of sense. I'd like to write in several genres, but find the promotion for just one exhausting at times, like you mentioned. Congratulations on your new publications and getting them "into that pipeline." :-)

Congratulations on getting so much work out there, Jacquie. I can imagine that the promotion that goes along with it is exhausting. I'm trying to time the re-release of some out of print books for a quieter time, when I have no new titles coming out. Congratulations also on the sale to Five Star.

Congratulations on the new contract! And on getting your backlist out there. The more we have out, the more visible we are. Hope you have many, many sales.

I offer my congrats too. I was on the e-book bandwagon long before Amazon and e-readers. I can remember when I'd give talks about e-books and everyone poo-pooed me, I even got booed once at a big writers conference.

Maryannwrites said...

Congrats on the new releases and the new contract with Five Star. Marilyn, I can't believe people actually booed you. Well, I believe you as you don't lie, but who would do that to such a nice lady?

I wish, wish, wish I could diversify, but I can't write anything but historicals. I've tried. Oh, well. At least I have a humongous backlist, so I can get all those old books out in e-book and audio format. I think it's great that you can diversify, Jacquie!

You are Amazing! That is all!

CONGRATS on upcoming release and back list as well. I have been out of commission during the last year and am now in the throes of researching self-publishing. It's hard to think of not having L&L. I have some reprints I would like to pursue, but right now the pond is too deep to get something in the pipeline.
My best.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Rose,

Thanks for the suggestion and invitation.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Maddy,

I really don't think I'm that productive, but I do work every morning on some aspect of writing.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Bobbi,

I know you work in more than one genre too and I think that's great!

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Susan,

I think pacing is wise. This is a real advantage of self-publishing your backlist--you can choose the time that is most appropriate. So far, I haven't self-published but there are real benefits.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Janis,

Like you, I do see the value of getting those backlist titles out to new readers.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Marilyn,

I can't believe anyone would boo you! I agree with Maryann. You were forward-looking for certain.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Alice,

I think you do diversify in that you write romance, mystery and Westerns.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Thanks, D'Ann, I think you're amazing too!

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Betty,

Like you, I miss L&L. I loved working with Lisa and Linda. But me must look for more wonderful publishers and they are out there.

You have been busy, Jacqueline. I know what you mean about promotion being exhausting. Especially if you try to write and edit something every day, too. But good for you getting so many titles out there in different formats. Sometimes I think writers forget that some readers will not read ebooks, so it's important to have prints books also available. Good luck with all present and upcoming projects!

Maris said...

Good ideas, Jacqueline, especially about getting ones backlist out. As you said, there are many readers coming along who won't have read those books. It's a shame not to have them available. I do admire your energy. Keep it up.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Jan,

You're right. Many readers prefer to read print books. That's why it is important to have our books available through many formats.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Maris,

Reaching as many readers as possible is my goal as it is yours.

Sharon Ervin said...

Two questions for you.

Why have you not seemed to venture into audio books?

If a large New York publisher expressed interest, but asked you to contract for the upcoming work under a different name, would you do that? The reason is that you have enjoyed only moderate success with your earlier work and they want to launch "a new you."

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Sharon,

Those are interesting questions. I'd love to be published in audio. But the opportunity hasn't presented itself. As to the big publishers, you need an agent to reach them. I don't have one.

Nancy J. Cohen said...

Congrats on the new sale to Five Star! I've had six releases in 2014 and the promotion can be exhausting. Two are new titles with different publishers, Five Star and Wild Rose Press. One is large print edition with Wheeler. One is paperback with Worldwide. And two are indie pubbed nonfiction titles. Next up? New hardcover mystery in 2015. Audio editions of my backlist titles. You sound just as busy.

Kaye George said...

Kudos on the new deal! It's hard having multiple publishers and having books come out all at once. Good luck with all of it!

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Nancy,

I don't think I'm as busy as you are! You're doing great.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Hi, Kaye,

Congrats on your new cozy mystery with a really big publisher!

Kaye George said...

Thanks!

You are an inspiration, Jacquie. I had two books come out this year from different publishers and it was/is exhausting! One of the challenges I face each day is : how will I spend my time today. There are so many ways we can reach out through the internet and connect with readers, and it seems like there's not enough time to do it all.

A thought I keep in the forefront of my mind is: pay yourself first. My stock in trade is new books, as I've already put my back list out as ebooks. I have one book to be released May 2015, and I just subbed another to the same publisher. I also have an eco-thriller series I'm going to bring out soon. Busy busy busy!

Great post, and you know I always enjoy your books!

I'm always happy to hear good news from you, Jacqueline. Best wishes for even greater success in the future. You earned it, you deserve it, and you wear it with style and grace.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Maggie,

You're really good at reaching readers. One day, you'll have to blog on the subject. And I'm a fan of your books too!

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Earl,

You're so kind! As you know, I've read your novels and enjoyed them very much.

B.K. Stevens said...

Congratulations on all your publications! The covers you've posted are striking.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Thank you, Bonnie. I appreciate your good words!

Susan Coryell said...

Jacquie: I am in awe of your output and efforts to feed that book pipeline. Good luck with the new e-book and your other works, as well.

Joan Reeves said...

I'm late to the party, but I'm happy to hear this news. Congratulations, Jacquie.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Susan,

Thank you for your good thoughts!
I hope to keep putting product in the pipeline as long as I'm able.

Jacqueline Seewald said...

Joan,

Thank you as well. Late is still great!
