But it's not a character's perfection that makes you root for him--it's his basic character. I had readers email me in the middle of reading The Cost of Love and say "If you killed Dean, I will never speak to you again." If I can make that kind of connection, I'm happy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-63290939491448859512010-06-07T16:33:56.852-04:002010-06-07T16:33:56.852-04:00First, I came over here to see your dad. And to your topic - I quit writing a book once because I hated the hero and he couldn't be fixed. If you don't like your characters - your readers won't either.Bailey Stewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00639029254352011915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-38243776593179447672010-06-07T16:01:24.967-04:002010-06-07T16:01:24.967-04:00FINALLY, blogger is healed. Weak characters can't carry a good plot (with a couple of aberrant exceptions that turn into best-sellers that make you want to pull your hair!)Terry Odellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11610682530545306687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-8492643191627450542010-06-07T08:43:30.887-04:002010-06-07T08:43:30.887-04:00You're so right, Drue! The characters have to appear real. Romantic fiction requires larger than life characters populate the novel. However, we can draw on the characteristics of real people to flesh them out.Jacqueline Seewaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09177500620940251009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-34538850849781757052010-06-07T07:31:03.935-04:002010-06-07T07:31:03.935-04:00You've hit the proverbial nail on the head, Dr...You've hit the proverbial nail on the head, Drue. Ask any non-thriller reader who David Morrell is and you'll get blank stares. Ask if they've ever heard the name Rambo, and you get immediate recognition. Memorable complex characters are the key. The more I write, the more I'm convinced of that! Great post!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
