Groups sure have their place, and can be very helpful. I have gotten help from beginning writers, even after being published. For beginners, I think the trickiest part is learning what to listen to and change, and what to ignore. But alas, i did go from group to group.

You make a lot of good points, Skye, and I agree wholeheartedly on the importance of having a group formed around level of skill and genre. Our Salem group was probably the most successful just because of those reasons--skill and genre. Margaret was a great leader also. And of course the wine.Susan Oleksiwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02693057997469296068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-50672779088872732742011-11-04T11:46:49.445-04:002011-11-04T11:46:49.445-04:00As a former member of two writers' groups in w...As a former member of two writers' groups in which you were an important part, I feel I've received tremendous help from my writer friends and rely heavily on a group's input.

Of all the groups I've been in, I've found the best type for me is one whose members all work in the same or similar genre, all are somewhat close in their level of skill and goals, and where constructive, truthful commentary is shared by all members. Structure and seriousness, within a supportive and friendly environment are important to me, too. And wine helps!

I loved our Monday nights at Margaret Press's house and miss that wonderful group. My blog is a bit tongue-in-cheek, as you can tell, but the genuine support was real. In the beginning that can be enough to get going, but then the writer does need informed judgments. I have two readers I trust and I would never give them up.Susan Oleksiwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02693057997469296068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-258607056975754822011-11-04T10:03:51.285-04:002011-11-04T10:03:51.285-04:00I enjoyed your blog, Susan. We all wrote in different genres, and for me, it wasn't helpful to hear comments from writers who knew nothing about the nuances of my genre, same as I didn't feel qualified to comment on, for example, the horror genre. In that group, there was mostly a lot of head nodding going on. There was support to keep writing, but no real information or critiques given. My best experience has been in having one critique partner for the last 4 years--someone who writes in my genre, is honest in her review of my work, is a good writer that I trust, and wants me to succeed as much as I want to succeed. We have never met; she lives in Colorado, I'm in Maryland. But I wouldn't trade my working relationship with her for any writers' group.Staceyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09336816016806803061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105320592980752653.post-9844510838206245402011-11-04T09:57:41.015-04:002011-11-04T09:57:41.015-04:00Hi, Susan,

All of the groups you mention provide support both intellectual and emotional for group members. Writing is a solitary profession. We need all the support and help we can get from others who understand what we do.Jacqueline Seewaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09177500620940251009noreply@blogger.com
